The UK and US have agreed to a significant commercial pact that will keep zero tariffs on British medicine shipments entering the American market.

The Terms of the Pact

Under the terms of the agreement, the UK has agreed to increase spending on medicines through the National Health Service (NHS). This pledge ensures that duties on these key exports will stay at nothing for a period of the next three years.

This agreement is in response to recent statements to significantly raise duties on patented drug products, with increases discussed as high as one hundred percent.

"This agreement with the Britain reinforces the international landscape for cutting-edge drugs and establishes much-needed fairness to American-British drug exports," a release declared.

Economic Importance

Pharmaceuticals represent one of the the United Kingdom's biggest export categories to the America, which is clearly the biggest destination for large UK drugmakers.

Statistics reveal that in the 12 months to the end of September, the UK sold drugs valued at over eleven billion pounds to the US. This value made up 17.4% of British export trade in that timeframe.

"This deal safeguards jobs, increases capital expenditure and facilitates the UK to become a international leader for life sciences," the Business and Trade Secretary remarked.

Detailed British Pledges

The deal involves several key commitments from the UK:

  • Revised Affordability Limit: The UK will lift the price threshold at which it deems new treatments to be prohibitively costly by a quarter.
  • Increased NHS Spending: There is a aim to double overall health service expenditure on drugs from 0.3% of the national economy to 0.6 percent over the following ten-year period.
  • Rebate Cap: The percentage drug companies must return to the NHS to prevent overspending will be limited at 15%. Previously, refunds exceeded twenty percent.

Broader Context

The pact follows a protracted row between the drug companies and the UK government over medicine costs and approval rates.

This friction were heightened by arguments that American customers were paying a premium for the identical medicines than consumers in the other developed nations.

Over the last 18 months, several large pharmaceutical investments in the UK have been halted or abandoned, while major expansions have been directed toward projects in the United States.

A senior figure stated that the NHS had to spend more on treatments, noting that its expenditure on drugs had decreased as a share of its resources over the past decade.
